The Best Time to Run in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Chennai
Most runners pick their timing based on work schedule. Almost nobody picks it based on air quality data.
They should. The difference can be 2–3 cigarettes of PM2.5 exposure.
Why AQI Changes Through the Day
Three things drive it:
Traffic — AQI spikes at 8–10 AM and 6–9 PM
Temperature inversions — at night, cold air traps pollutants near the ground. Worst just before sunrise.
Solar convection — afternoon sun disperses particles upward. Mid-afternoon is often the cleanest window.
City by City
DelhiWorst: 7–10 AM (inversion + rush hour combined)
Best: 1–3 PM
Winter note: December–January, even 5 AM can be above AQI 200. Mid-afternoon is genuinely the cleanest.
Worst: 8–10 AM, 6–9 PM
Best: 5–7 AM (sea breeze helps) or 2–4 PM
Tip: Coastal routes (Marine Drive, Worli) are 20–30% cleaner than inland areas.
Worst: 8–10 AM, 6–9 PM
Best: 5:30–7:30 AM — Bangalore's early morning is genuinely clean most of the year.
Note: Most forgiving city of the four.
Worst: 8–10 AM, 6–9 PM
Best: 5–7 AM at Marina Beach — sea breeze + lower temperatures.
Note: Heat matters as much as AQI here in summer.
The Simple Rule
If you can't check daily:
Run before 7 AM or between 1–3 PM. Avoid 8–10 AM and 6–9 PM.
Works for all four cities, all year except monsoon (when AQI is low anyway).
