What AQI 187 Actually Does to Your Body When You Run

Delhi's AQI hits 187. Most people shrug and go for their morning run anyway.

Here's what's actually happening inside your body.

You Stop Nose-Breathing

When you run, your breathing rate jumps from 15 to 60 breaths per minute. You switch to mouth-breathing. Your nose which filters large particles is now bypassed entirely.

Everything in the air goes straight in.

PM2.5 Gets All the Way to Your Lungs

PM2.5 is 28x smaller than a human hair. Your nose can't catch it. Your throat can't catch it. It reaches your alveoli the tiny sacs where oxygen actually enters your blood.

Once there, your immune system tries to fight it. That triggers inflammation. Your airways swell slightly. Your SpO₂ drops. Your HRV deteriorates.

You won't feel it during the run. You'll feel it 12 hours later.

The Cigarette Math

Breathing air at PM2.5 ~75 µg/m³ (typical at AQI 187) for 30 minutes while running = roughly 3 cigarettes of PM2.5 exposure.

You wouldn't smoke before a run. But on a bad air day, that's the trade you're making.

Does This Mean Stop Running?

No. One bad-air run won't cause lasting damage in a healthy adult. The problem is doing it every day for months.

The fix is simple: check the air before you go, and pick the cleanest window.

AQI 187 at 8 AM might be AQI 95 at 2 PM. Same city. Same day. Very different lungs.
